There's something to be said about a MASSIVE screen with a sound system so loud the neighbors would complain if it were in your living room. Some movies just are not as good in your living room.

Who wouldn't rather see the latest Harry Potter, Batman, 'Day After Tomorrow' type disaster flick on a big screen?

I go to see movies in a theater because the movie is designed for that kind of venue, or because my sister and I want a night out together. DVD availability wouldn't affect that.

I love movies in theaters. The sound and picture is so much better. Plus I like the ambiance of the audience laughing with a good joke or punchline.

But the cost is crazy! ~$10/person for tickets, Another $5~$10/person if you get any food. It can easily cost $20 to $40+ for two to go to the theater once, much less a family.

With DVD I can rent it for a $1. Watch it when I want. Stop it to go to the facilities. Fix popcorn and snacks for everyone for under $5. Or I can buy it and have it forever (if it is a movie I really like), and it is still cheaper than going to the theater.

Avatar is the first movie I've seen in a while that I thought was worth paying the money to go see in the theater. (And it had the theater only benefit/draw of being in 3D.)

A few years back we use to have $0.99 theaters that would get movies about the same time (maybe a little before) the DVD release. I would go to them all the time. But sadly the have all gone out of business and there are none near me.

Ditto. With only a few exceptions, like if a movie sounds so good I feel I have to go see it in a theater, the only other times I go to a show is when a friend or neighbor wants company so much they'll pay my way. Even then I'm not particularly thrilled to go but I feel like it's the right thing to do. If it's a genre of film I especially have no interest in, say something scary, I'll go to http://www.themoviespoiler.com/ and prepare myself in advance for any surprises and then I'll feel sufficiently prepared for what might otherwise have been an unsettling experience.
