As long as it comes with the option to ignore specific people and never receive their messages.
No one specific for me at the moment, though. :)
It would also be necessary to not get direct access to other's email, but to have the site be a go-between (you make the message, give to them, and they send it). This is useful both ways, as the recipient doesn't need the address of the sender, either, just their name

Yes I feel the same myself about those conditons. I am on a different forum that indeed works that way, you only reveal your e-mail when you want to but you can still send and receive messages in private as well.
I disagree, sometimes for instance there can be things which you would not feel comfortable about sharing with the entire group or things that you know are interesting to one person in particular but will only use up space in here.
I agree it usually does not make much sense to spoil one's energy on abusive people. But it was not that what I was intending the possibility of sending personal messages for, I was indeed thinking of responses to questions like that earlier one of you. It has happened in the past that I did not comment on a question because I thought I would be sharing too much personal stuff that way.
This is a question I have at times asked myself. (Anyway I am not one of the Ask500 people in disguise so I have no power to decide in the matter). Given some conditions like those mentioned above by enigmamz I would be in favor of it.
I do realize it opens up the possibility of people terrorizing your mailbox, but when there is the possibility of using an ignore button for certain users that should be easy to solve.
I once belonged to an e-mail server, there you could automatically see the e-mail address of each person who posted so it was not very private. I had several interesting private interactions following that and once a negative experience. That was when someone reposted our private conversation to the entire group.
Anyway people can already contact me now because I put an e-mail address in my profile. So far nobody has ever used that though so most things can probably be dealt with here on the forum or they did not spot it.
I tried this last year when my wife and I went to Key West. I asked if anyone wanted anything from there and if they did, send it to odessaphiles@gmail.com. Same still applies. I meant it as an open invitation to anyone. The funny thing is, the only ones that wrote to me where sillynilly, dauguy, TheSheep, and Hauli, who is doing well and is extremely busy at this time. Same offer still applies and I may post it again in a few weeks...

OR you could just have a contact form on your site like I do, so if anyone needs to privatly contact me, it's there for that purpose. I think it's

No, this site is better without the social networking aspect.
