This question is in response to the complete failure of Maine to get its shit together last night on this issue. I'm convinced this is a civil rights issue and has no fucking business being put on a ballot initiative. There are some states who would still be segregating and making interracial marriage illegal if they could get away with it, so obviously states can't handle this pretty straightforward task.
Somebody's obviously going to have to take a case to SCOTUS to get this taken care of, to put an end to Republicans and churches making sure people do not have equal rights.
Yeah, Maine used to be cool. Now it's just another region without equal rights.
It shouldn't be determined at the state level. Either everyone is equal under the Constitution of the United States, or they are not.
And Loving v. Virginia established that marriage is a Constitutionally protected right.
Surprisingly, I agree with your point. However, the States will continue to face the issue until the Supreme Court rules that marraige can only be defined by the federal government.
Until it does, I suggest gay adults that want to be married vote with their feet. Live where you are appreciated. We do it for economic reasons every day. If pro-Gay marriage people are right, blue states will be enriched and red states will be poorer for it.
This issue was settle with Loving v. Virginia. The only reason to pursue it is to make a people not human, other, an endeavor at which this country excels--having has so much practice.
Your position is polarizing. That's not helpful if you want peoples minds and politics to change. There are many good reasons outside of religion or bigotry to oppose gay marraige. 31 of 31 states that have voted on gay marraige have voted it down.
I'm the average sort of guy whose mind you might change. I am not offended by someone being gay. I understand the need and desire to form permanent, legal, long term relationships. BUT, nobody has ever answered whether this will have a negative effect on American society. Whenever questions of any sort are asked, we are slapped down as bigots or religious nuts. It's no wonder that gay marraige has been voted down 31 of 31 times.
When you slap down Americans, they slap back, not change their mind.
If providing someone equal rights under the law destroys your society, it was pretty rotten to start with.
That's what I'm talking about. You still haven't answered the question. If it's true, why slap people with it? If it's not true, (which it's not) then you lose credibility in the long run.
It's not true because comparatively small changes can produce large changes in society. I can't find accurate sources that identify the changes that occur when gay marraige is instituted. It leads me to believe that ugly things happen that damage society. Otherwise, gay marraige advocates would be trumpeting the information from the mountaintops. Other countries have gay marraige. What happened with them? We might argue over how applicable information from other countries is, but at least we would have a basis for fact instead of a shouting match.
The only real way to find out is to do it. If your society is so rotten that treating others as equals destroys it, better it should be gone.
That's idiotic. First sociologists and historians do the research. ALL great societies have been destroyed. The question is never 'Can it be done?', but 'How is it going to be done?'
Throughout history, actions have been against society's codes of conduct. Throughout American history, homosexuality, rape and sex with animals has been considered equally perverted. Now, in just the last generation, we have decided that homosexuality is equal to heterosexuality. Although that may be right, it would be incredibly stupid to go forward just because we feel good about it. And that is exactly what you and others like you are attempting to cram down people's throats.
It's like I explained before, don't be surprised that the push-back alone will doom your efforts for at least another generation.
Yep. And not ONE has historically been destroyed by kindne3ss and equality among it citizens. But partisan hatred has ripped apart empires. Thanks for making my point for me.
That's the first good point you've made in this discussion.
There is one exception that I can think of, (Spanish culture destroyed by the Moors) but that exception may prove the rule.
I still think we ought to do the research though before blindly accepting homosexuality=heterosexuality.
???
It was Christians who destroyed the Moorish culture in Spain. When the Moors got there, it was a mess under the Goths who had taken what was left by the collapse of Rome.
A marginal look at the timeline makes it pretty clear that Spanish culture was BROUGHT by the Moors.
Thank you. It was my original point. Sorry it was over your head.
Those voting for the green option presumably would support whichever option gets the most votes on this poll, unless they are hypocrites.
