They already are for a fixed time period--26 weeks, plus in some states an extension of from 9 to 26 weeks. You are not required to accept a job for more than 10% less than your last job.
So that's how it is. Three of those choices are already the law.
None of the above... I personally know someone that can get a job but will not because she is content in drawing unemployment as long as she can. I am sure she is not the only one doing this. I think about two months of benefits should be tops.
Not all are in that position--would a case by case study be better.
There are other factors. People who were laid of due to lack of work, but have a definite start date to return, don't get the same pressure to find a job that permanent lay-offs get to find a job. And why should they? The employer wants to keep someone who has experience of the employer's needs off the job market so that they have an experienced worker available at the employer's whim.
It is yet another way the employer's lay off the costs of doing business onto others--in this case, other employers.
People forget WHY we have unemployment insurance. It is because people were routinely fucked over in a number of ways by employers. For example, someone who was due a longevity raise would be fired instead.
For every individual that abuses unemployment--and there are some, because when you talk about millions of people that is a statistical certainty--there were a hundred employers who abused--and still abuse--their employees. These folks are quick to talk about how little loyalty their workers have, yet show none in return. Why are they so surprised?
Have you been seeing a lot of news stories about how companies are having to look outside the country for workers because those millions on unemployment are refusing to work? Don't be silly. The availability of employment isn't under control of employees, so it is beyond hypocritical to abuse people who collect unemployment for the sins of a very few.
well, the Repug answer is not very long at all, Because when someone no longer qualifies for unemployment, they are no longer counted as unemployed. By reducing the benefit to two weeks, we could fix the unemployment problem in America in a month.
