You would want to get a good reference from them, so the reason you give for leaving, will make the difference.
You could say your going to do a university course.
It also seems to be an acceptable reason, for people to say they are going to work overseas. Employers seem to see it as a positive thing to do.
Oh ! they will survive without you.
You could help choose your replacement.
Do you live to work..or do you work to live?
If you are so essential, why don't they treat you better and make it a job you can at least tolerate?
Agree completely. The more damage you do by leaving, the more it serves the bastards right.
If the company were going to lay you off, they would do it on their time-line and not yours. I suggest that you approach this in the same way. If the time is right for you now, then leave the company. Don't loose sleep about the companies needs. (there are always exceptions.... ex. the company tanks because you leave and 100 other people loose their jobs).
If you hate the work (as apposed to the company) quit but just be flexible and give plenty of notice. If it is a bad company, don't worry about it. Just tell them you have a better job and give the standard two weeks notice.
