My family has become minimalists- very few possessions also. My parents had us all do our first science project on composting so that we would know how as adults.
Your parents were very forward-thinking - it's worrying how disposable Society has become. Although I think recycling commitment in the UK can also depend on how pro-active the local council is in promoting it and helping people.

Before kerbside recycling was introduced here I was doing a 15 mile round car trip to recycle. Ridiculous!
We have recycling bins just across the road. Small neighborhood bins seem to work best. Close, fast and you can drop stuff on the way to the bus :-)
