Canada
I want to know others opinions on this issue after being an electoral issue. I favour the last one because two years ago getting a higher metal count was more important. Now I see if the Liberals or New Democrats change thing if they're elected.
I do agree the arts need more money but with with the federal budget and a goal to increase funding for sports. Can't we just live in a rough patch for a few year and create better quality works after words. I forgot the name of this recent report but it showed this evidence.
Fo real, Canada need to throw a few mill in the direction of culture. No lye but Canada is really the JC Penny version of the U.S. All the top movies in Canada are American... top music artists, American...
Top hits from "Canada difference America" on google.

And two the differences according to actual canadians:

[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny89FJltcWc], and this one.... oh goodness, his "american" friends must be some hardcore white trach because we DO NOT talk like that here.... i swear, has he went to the movie thetures is while... or bought a new phone.... maybe if he went down to his local Pacific theatre he would know he is WAY off on his understanding on how americans talk...
In my mind sports have nothing to do with culture, but I have no problem with providing athletes/programs with more funding.
Why should either one get government funding??
My reasoning is completely selfish. I'm bored.
Seriously, that's what it comes down to for me. I don't know if you've noticed, but the entertainment industry...pretty big...even here in little old Canada. For arts in particular, I'm a huge proponent of youth programs. I have no problem spending my tax dollars on funding creativity in youth - writers, painters, performers, musicians, sculptors...whoever else I'm missing (except mimes. I hate mimes).
Budding artists need help. Hell, adult artists need help too. In the end they give me something to watch and listen to. Entertainment...I'm all over it.
The "cultural industry" pumps billions of dollars into our economy. I'm all for pouring some of that back into the people maintaining the culture.
Private phylanthropy should be used to fund anything that is not a public necessity. I do have a problem funding the arts because really good artists dont need the funding and bad artists need to find something they are good at. Art is so subjective that using public money to support it is always going to piss someone off. Spend the money on schools or roads, but not on art. Just my opinion....
