There are always stupids, odessaphiles, everyone has to watch out for, special since the fall of the Berlin Wall incl. the transfer trucks going from East to West and vice versa passing through Germany. Plus the Autobahns are much more crowded since, special on weekends and at the beginning and the end of school vacations. Amazingly there are not as many accidents as someone would expect.
Trains are good, reliable and even offer special prices for different occasions; very good offers for roundtrips which incl. some other countries. They can be booked from here incl. seat reservations at traveller offices. I recommand seat reservations which can be booked there as well, but I would not do that in the last minute. They might be booked out.
On week end trips my friends take trains for
half price. It's more comfortable, stress free and cheaper.
Then you'll be perfectly trained to drive in SoFla :-)
Do they really have ambulances standing by for the accidents? Is it more of a performance test track for high performance cars? Or is that the "aura" that is created in the US?
Answer to your question, odessaphiles, if ambulances are standing by: Yes and no.
They are standing by only (!!!) at certain times and areas when high traffic is expected like school vacations, special events and such. For vacations many travel to southern countries because of sunnier weather conditions. They come from all over Europe to travel South on mostly German Autobahns.
As soon as schools close fridays the rush is on with stop and go and stand-stills of 40 ( if lucky), 50, 60, 70 km/h and even much more. The most I have heart of on the radio was 120 / 140 km/h due to several, heavy accidents.
I think, you might want to know why would anyone do that knowingly to themselves, special to their children? It does not make any sense to me, because they could leave some days later to avoid that kind of traffic. Couldn't they? Some do, many not. Well, everyone I asked out of curiosity insisted (!) they wouldn't mind the traffic problems, they just wanted to reach their vacation destination (some were campers) as soon as possible. And yes, they would return fully refreshed. (?) While one is driving the other driver would sleep 'til the next 'exchange'. They would bring their food with them, eat in their cars and would stop only to use rest-rooms or if not possible due to the traffic there are always 'alternatives' at the side of the road. Children, I knew well, told me the same, and their parents, our neighbors, were not even present. I believe, that's only, because the children did not know better.
Have you ever seen photos of how over crowded those favorite places are? Horrible! And that's called vacation!? Please don't forget they all have to come home and are already looking forward to their next summer vacation!?
I am not kidding and no, I don't have to understand such craziness.
Btw: All our friends with small children enjoyed their vacation at the ocean in North-Germany. It was not over crowded, they brought their usual clothes for cold, rainy days and returned home happy and relaxed. Sometimes they had even more warm, sunny days than those in the South. Of course, the sea water was cold, they didn't mind and then what are heated pools for?
I hope, with these long explanations I have answered your questions, odessaphile.
In high school, I had a '69 Charger 440 magnum with a 6 pack carb. Buried the speedometer for several miles outside Washington DC (160 mph). Damn near blew it up, but it may have been the origin of "Wooooo-Hooooo".
I used to have a 1969 340 Formula S Barracuda coupe.
Sure.
About 161 kilometers per hour. Um ! no, our roads wouldn't be good enough. Plus I would loose my license.
