You can tell when a free-market economy reaches bottom. More than half the people live below the poverty line and there are no public works, like public health, sewage treatment, water supply, or road maintenance left. The middle class disappears, and there are a few new billionaires replacing them. The top of the market is crowded with companies getting billions from government contracts, like the Homeland Security industry here.

Not when your police forces are military in nature and action--kinda like ours are, now. And if you can disappear people and torture them with impunity--kinda like you can now. Terrorism is far more effective than a middle class.
When you take a look at the Southern Cone (Chile, Argentina, brazil) and the first time free-market economics was ramrodded down their throats, it was enforced by terrorism. People disappeared and never returned. People were gunned down in the streets. People were taken, tortured, and released to tel their tales. All without benefit of law, court, trial, or justice.
Why did that not happen here, when the Bush Administration made their huge disaster-obscured free market changes in the US? In part because, after 9/11, people were willing to sell their freedom for a mess of propaganda; but also because too much midnight disappearing of an armed populace is stupid.

No, the middle class is needed to keep the poor under control. Else corruption and crime will become to big of a problem for the rich.

Sure in the short term, in the long term there is always an armed uprising....
Only when the poor have arms.
Which explains my stand on gun control.
I understand your stance, but there are always guns available for poor people.
