Yes "gay" is not a four letter word.

No "gay" is not a four letter word.

You can see why I wasn't sure. ;)

Sorry perhaps I did not formulate the question clear enough...Anyway I read it on a T-shirt recently and it made me smile.

How does it make you feel when people use that word to describe something in a negative sense? Personally I find it demeaning and I am not even gay.

Hmm, that might have been a bad choice of words......

I agree completely - I think as well its demeaning. To me it is a sign of stupidity when people use it that way.

Years ago when I worked in New Zealand, parliament was discussing a bill that would disallow discrimination based on amongst other things sexual preferences. One day I decided to wear a pink button on my overalls a friend of mine had given me with written on it "HUG, Heterosexual Unafraid of Gays", Not sure if it made a difference, but I did get a lot of MP's looking at me. I hope it made them feel a little more comfortable in voting for the bill, I am not claiming they wouldn't have passed the bill without me anyway. But I didn't think those opposing were playing "nice" either. After the bill passed the controversy died down. Sadly I don't think we will ever get away from bigots totally.

Which makes me wonder, did you work in the New Zealand parliament? How interesting :-) Good to hear that bill passed, it is sad in a way that we need, and even need to fight for, bills that simply protect us from discriminating one another.

What is a "four letter word" in this regard? I heard it the first time on this side and would like to learn. Is it a mean expression then, no, I don't want to know.

I don't understand the big fuzz about homosexuality either. Who is What is of no one's business. Instead the only (!!!) difference should be the character of a person.

From Wikipedia:

The phrase four-letter word refers to a set of English-language words written with four letters which are considered profane, including common popular or slang terms for excretory functions, sexual activity and genitalia, and (depending up the listener/reader) sometimes also certain terms relating to Hell and damnation when used outside their original religious context, and/or slurs. The "four-letter" claim refers to the fact that a large number of English "swear words" are incidentally four-character monosyllables. This euphemism came into use during the first half of the twentieth century.

Thank you very much, pollewop. NOW I got it - finally. Puuh, was I standing on a long line! I misunderstood the question.

I agree with you that one's sexual orientation should not be an issue to other people at all. Sadly we live in a world where this is not always the case, it is not just the minority that faces discrimination and has to stand up for its rights, it is also the fact that many people are uneducated about homosexuality and/or uncomfortable with it.

I agree with you 100 %, pollewop, which does not mean I understand. You know what I mean. :)
