I enjoy the USA. I prefer to live in Canada, but it would be my second choice.
I've never wanted to visit Canada because it's the last stop before you get to the Arctic. I have always had this mental image of igloos and Northern Lights and the midnight sun and I just figured it is probably far too cold up there.
When the wind chill down here gets to -25 degrees Fahrenheit I think about people I see in chatrooms regularly that live in Canada and figure it must get so cold where they live their words probably freeze as they speak and the people they spoke to probably have to wait for spring for the words to thaw out so they can hear what the other person was saying. :-`)
I am afraid to visit the USA.
lol - you shouldn't be. They make it sound like this horrid place full of violence and crime. The vast majority of it is really quite boring! People would beat each other senseless trying to talk to you - we love Aussies.

[1 point] 4 years ago byI do not hate the USA. I just hate how we follow them so closely, in the terms of media, culture, government, etc. Although the last one might change now we have a new Prime Minister.
I was shocked while in England to see how much the BBC talked about America. Confused me for a second - thought I was watching the American edition of the evening news. (lol) My guess is, quite honestly, that it's because we're bigger (population wise) so there's always more going on. If it's a slow news day in Australia - they look to see what's going on in Allied countries. It's a ratings game. The more controversy there is - the more people watch. Sad, really.
True, the "if it bleeds, it leads" policy comes into play a lot so we see the scary stuff emphasised. But (for instance) US murders/head of population are about three times as high as the Australian rate.
ETA. Ooops - answered wrong reply. But you'll figure it out :)
If you REALLY wanted non-Americans to answer this poll, you should have waited and run it around noon. You would have gotten more of Europe, Asia, and the Aussies who stay up late!
Well, I'm an American who knows how to read. I didn't answer it. Since I assume 75% of Americans also know how to read I am opining that the people with USA flags by their names who did respond are actually hosting foreign exchange students and they let these non-American students login from their personal account rather than advising them to create their own account before responding to the question.
I refuse to believe any of my fellow Americans would be so totally IGNORANT that they would answer questions they were specifically told not to answer. To do so would totally skew the accuracy of the poll and I know all these goody two-shoes (like me) that state in polls how wrong it is to steal copyrighted tunes would feel equally immoral about impersonating a non-American in a poll. Don't you agree?
Take a look at how long the pending questions have been posted. Since the order of priority seems to be according to the number of points added, there is no way to determine when a question is going to be posted. I assume that you, like me and others on here, read the questions and give their responses and comments before, during, and sometimes long after the question has the top billing on the site. Noting that I did receive votes from persons all over the world, I think the timing was all right. And, Chipmonk, trust me, the I-word does apply to many of our fellow Americans.
There's a difference between the USA, the entity, which can seem graceless, overbearing, arrogant etc and Americans, the individual people. Most of the Americans I've met are nice, even the (somewhat demanding) students. And very polite!
You have to remember our overall crime rate is very high mainly because of big inner city gangs. Crime can happen anywhere but these gangs make it seem artificially higher than it really is to everyday people. Most of us go to work and hit the bars without a worry in the world. I'm sure there are probably some neighborhoods in Australia that most people avoid and it is the same here. If you stay in a decent area most of the people will bend over backwards to lend a hand or assist a damsel in distress.
