Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia. In fact, I can physically swim in the ocean, swim in a lake and swim in a river in less than 1/2 hour with a car. Not long swims mind you, just dips. But I've done it just to see if I could. If I want to add a hike in the mountains, I can do all four before lunch and then play golf in the afternoon. Shawnigan Lake is a beautiful place located on Vancouver Island. Today it's about 95 degrees outside so I think I'll go jump in the lake after dinner.

It depends on the time of the year. In the Spring and Fall, the beach in Mexico is great, and only 3 1/2 hours from Phoenix. In the Summer, the mountains north of Phoenix are wonderful, and only a couple of hours away. When it's 115 in Phoenix, it is around 80 up there. In the Winter, I would much prefer to just stay here in the desert.
I live near the mountain and go on the top of it when I'm feeling a bit masohistic (it takes me about 5 to get up & down) :). For holiday I'd defenitely go for the beach.
