If you imply that the European Union is a country.... then sure.... and if we play by your rules.... NAFTA powns the European Union.... so lets stick to rank by country.... not groups that make up treaties....

EU: 14,430,000,000,000

NAFTA: 13,780,000,000,000 + $ 1,353,000,000,000 + 1,271,000,000,000 [U.S. + Mexico + Canada]

So what does the U stand for in USA?

United.

When there is no borders between Mexico-USA a common parliament and Mexican politicians can influence every aspect of USA's political life you can compare EU with NAFTA.

We really aren't that far off from that.

Ever tried to cross the border between Canada and the USA? I have had them go trough and look under my car with mirrors, only other place that has happened to me is in Eastern Europe during the cold war.

Ok sweetie, well when i buy a new globe and see a big country that says "European Union" and not "France", "Germany", etc..... then you can claim whatever the point you are trying to affirm. And by-the-way, there is open borders for people in the U.S. going to Mexico.... you just drive right on through....

I didnt say it is a country, I said that its far different from NAFTA.

If a belgian politician wants to change a law or even the constitution in Greece he can actually make it happen, if a mexican politician wants to abolish the right to bear arms in the US does he stand a chance of doing so?

Can a mexican go work in the US no question asked? Can he vote in the US even though he isnt an american?

In other words NAFTA is a mere free trade agreement while EU is a political-economic entity which is recognised as such by most international organisations.

In the recent g20 summit btw hosted by the US Jose Manuel Barroso(European commision president) was invited to represend the EU.

It never was, it never will be.

Define "greatest"!

It has the most powerful military certainly.

It has huge influence in the world (partly at least due to the above).

But it also has some real differences between the rich and the really, really poor.

In general people work longer hours and with less holiday days than many other countries.

There is a lot of religious fundamentalism in the country which I also see as a major weakness.

There are way to many pros and cons to go into in detail here.

Personally I am a big fan of America, but as for greatest, it depends on how you look at it.

Me too. That is why I want to see it live up to it's hype.

Well. As you pointed out, there's a huge gap between the (very small amount of) unfathomably rich and the (very small amount of) so-incredibly-poor-not-even-the-government-can-help poor. But most people in the US are simply middle-class - or if they're poor, they still are living quite easily, at least compared to many countries. So it's not nearly as bad as most places, I think.

More hours + less holiday days does not equal poor working conditions, though. If anything, I'd say it equals a harder working population! 40 hours a week is not unreasonable, so I don't think that's an issue.

But anyway, I didn't post this to disagree with you (I actually pretty well agree with your main point), just to clarify my stance on a couple of things.

I don't have any figures to back this up, but but from chatting to folks on here and elsewhere, it seems many ordinary Americans are now doing 2 jobs just to make ends meet.

As for holiday, I guess whatever you are used to seems the norm, but less than 5 weeks seems low to me.

From what we see on TV and read about, it seems there are quite a lot of po' folk in the South and in the inner cities too.

Tennasee and Louisiana seems to come to mind, as does Detroit and Pittsburg.

Sorry I can't be more specific, just odd bits that stuck in my mind.

As you say, I think we are not really disagreeing, just splitting hairs, but I's like to find out a bit more.

Wasn't that where they invented AIDS or am I getting my myths and conspiracy theories mixed up?

All that means is you are greater than whereever they come from.

It would not surprise me if size for size, we have as many buggers sneaking into here as you do :(

Now if you could only convince them of that, you could save us a fortune!!!

fancy standing on the Froggie side the the channel tunnel and tell them all they are wasting thier time?

(btw the simple answer is the welfare state. They can come here and get free housing, free medical care, cash benefits etc. I have known actual citizens in hardship who have applied for grants etc, and been told, unofficially of course, "if you were an asyulum seeker, I could give you X, Y and Z right away - as it is you go to the bottom of a year long waiting list")
