I've posted this question out of curiosity, I would assume that if someone had gone blind later in life then they would dream visually. But If someone has never seen before then can they see in there dreams? or do they dream about sounds etc?
Vision is a complex system which uses sensors (eyes), communications (optic and other nerves) and a processor (the brain). Damage to any of these can render a person blind.
One of my best friends is blind since she was about twelve and even before then was very limited on vision but she does dream visually. She knows many blind people who both were blind at birth or became blind at some point and I will ask her what her other friends say.
Hello, I am sorry that I took so long to answer. My friend said that since she could see some until she was about 13 she can see things from then if she dreams of things in that period of time but also as she gets older the images get less and less. For things that she has experienced after she became blind are just like being there. For a person who has never seen before they have a more realistic perspective because they can feel, hear, smell, and sense what is going on in their dreams. It is almost like they are awake and doing it because it is more real than just watching it happen. Not having ever (seen) my house when she has dreamed about being here she can smell our house and all that is in it (yes individually but all at once ) She can feel our houses carpet under her feet, she can feel the dogs hair ( knowing which dog is which ) as I said she might as well be there. She said that since all blind people have is sensory that is how they dream. I sure would not want to have a nightmare like she has dreams because it is one thing watching it but not feeling it and another to feel, smell, touch, and hear it. If you have any further questions let me know and if I can I will answer and if I can't I will ask her.

[1 point] 2 years ago by deleted user ReplyMy Mother dreams in colour and her dreams are very detailed and realistic. (she has lost her sight due to the disease Glaucoma)
This brings up another question that I have seen in a magazine.
"Do you see with your eyes or with your brain" ?

My father lost his sight when he was 33 y/o. He told me that he dreamed many times. I have no idea about the blind people from they were born.
Thanks for the replies.. it's an interesting question. Will be interested to see what others have to say! :)

Thanks Doreen. I'd love to hear from someone who has been blind since birth so if you could find out that would be great!!
I talked to my friend on the phone and forgot to ask but I will do that later today. Sorry I forgot. : )
