Gmail, AVG Free, Google Desktop, Google Documents, InfraRecorder, AlwaysOnTopMaker, Microplanet's Gravity, Quickpar, Adobe Reader, Shockwave, Java, MSN Live Messenger, 7-Zip, FileZilla, Returnil, Httrack, Irfranview, Putty, Winamp, Google Maps, Google Earth, Virtual Earth, Ghostscript, Azureus, DOSBox, WinAudit, Powertoys XP, Wordnet, Mp3tag, SysInternalsSuite, WinPcap, ...and these are just a few of the ones I put on this new pc (a week old), ...if I hadn't reformatted my old pc for an older relative who doesn't need all the programs I enjoy this list would be three times longer.
Freeware games of yore.... I'll never forget Moria and Ragnarok. I probably spent 100x the hours I've spent on Ask500 playing these two RPG games for pre-Pentium era computers; I also spent a lot of time playing the free levels of Castle Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny back when 386's were the cutting edge gaming machines.
Almost all of my software is freeware or open source.
Let's see ... GIMP, Inkscape, Pidgin, Scribus, Launchy, VLC, Mozilla Firefox, CutePDF, CCleaner, ClamWin, REAPER [Okay, not true freeware, but whatever], Azureus Vuze, and many others.
I have a funny feeling that the Ask500 beta crowd may be a little biased on this one. Personally, I'm a big fan of the VLC player and Dr. DivX, although the good Dr. has been uncooperative lately.
Most definitely pro. If you look at the stats, only a small percentage of people actually use Firefox, but I bet that most early adopters take advantage. Sadly, some mainstream internet users just don't care about the open source movement. In six months, it would be interesting to run the same poll and see if we get similar results.
So are you saying ask500 folks are early adopters or mainstream? (I've been using freeware since the days when Procomm was a free dialer for connecting to your local bbs AND McAfee Antivirus was always freeware. Uh, like 1980's, ...mainstream?)
I asked this question to see the popularity of Freeware/open source programs. If you have a favourite program please comment.

There is also a free Civ Game and and free Axis and Allies simulator out there. Both are excellent for killing time, but not your wallet.

Welcome to my computer.

Biased pro or anti? If so, why would we be any different than other web site users?
