Then we would have to change the law in order to introduce limitation periods. I would not agree with that, we shouldn't change laws because of individual cases (and, why is this case special anyway, because he's a famous director??).
Child abuse is not time-barred either in Switzerland nor (as it appears) in California. As long as these laws are as such he will have to go to court.

I hadn't done my research. I didn't know he drugged her. When I googled it I saw:
"Polanski drugged the girl with alcohol and qualudes and then raped and sodomized her. He should have faced the time and then appealed if he thought the judge was corrupt. No sympathy for the guy. It's not like he is suffering in France... oh yeah, he also supposedly "dated" Natashi Kinski when she was 15."
As I hear it Polanski was not convicted of rape but of having sex with an underage girl. And the victim wants all charges dropt and for this 76 year old man to be left alone. Imo her opinion should be given much weight - perhaps even more than those of our sages, Translate and Chipmonk.
I don't think her opinion should matter. She wants it to be over already, but are we sure he did not continue to attack young women? Why should the rich get away with that? What I don't understand is how anyone could defend him. We have put 80 yr. old priests in jail, and that is the right thing to do. NO ONE should be above the law.
The woman got money and it may have been hush money. That is not right either.

On further onsideration I think those saying it is never too late to punish child abusers are, in fact, right.
