I think Iran would not, first of all because Israel would retaliate with their 120 or so nukes. And secondly an Iranian nuclear strike would kill a lot of Arabs that live in Israel and neighboring countries. The only use the nukes could possibly have is to prevent an attack from Israel or the U.S.
The best way to resolve the situation is by Israel abiding by the U.N. resolutions. A declaration of both sides to not attack each other and in the long run negotiating a solution to the Palestinians that were pushed of their land when the Jewish people took Palestine by force. (I know I am dreaming)
If we prevent Iran from obtaining nukes while allowing Israel to have them, we will be seen (correctly) as hypocrites and fuel more hatred towards the west. We are already sending aid to Israel even though they do not honor the U.N. resolutions.
I don't think preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear arms is hypocrite, if we could still prevent Israel from obtaining them we should as well. All further spread of nuclear arms should be prevented as much as possible. Even stable and peacefull countries today could become the agressors of tomorrow.
Back to the question, I don't think Obama really believes the Iranian leaders just want it for energy, if so that would indeed be naive.
Iran may not launch a nuke but they would have no problem giving one to a suicide bomber. I don't think they give a damn how many Arabs they kill. Especially if they kill thousands of Israelis. Israel and the U.S. have no reason to launch a nuclear attack against Iran so deterrence is not the real issue.
The UN is a joke. No one takes them seriously. Making another resolution is just a waste of time.
These fanatics already hate the west. they don't need any help generating hatred towards us.
Why do you think they hate the west? The people I talk with in Iran do not dislike the west and after the planes hit the twin towers hundreds of thousands took to the streets in support of the U.S.

I wouldn't put anything past Iran. They don't care if the destroy the entire middle east so they are the ones that should be watching them. It isn't always up to the US to police the world.
Iran has stated that they believe Israel should be destroyed. Why would anyone think that they don't plan on using nuclear weapons to accomplish this?

Obama's said today that the Iran Nuclear program is just for electricity. Is he naive? or he just showing the muslim inside him?
that's a very bigoted response. What do you have against Muslims?

Maybe you would like to educate yourself about Iran? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/middle_east/2006/inside_iran/default.stm
No, because he doesn't believe that.
Agree---I don't think anyone really believes that.
When did Obama say this?
I don't believe he believes that. They man knows what is going on and he has a staff to keep him informed.
