Mr Obama attended the forum because he is the presumptive democratic party candidate, as did Mr McCain, to attend because he will be the standard bearer for his party. Bottom line, they attended to promote their candidacy, not because they cared who was providing the forum. btw - looks like wisdom and sensitivity overcame age and patriotism.

I agree that was most of the reason why, but I read a poll where quite a significant number of people believe Mr Obama is a Muslim. Knowing the strong currents of feeling and that many people do consider faith to be very important in their President, I find it hard to believe that the fact that the forum was faith based was completely incidental to either candidate's decision to attend.
Religion is a huge part in US politics. Candidates have to speak on those issues as well as others. I wish it wasn't so. But most Christians will more likely vote in a Christian who is against abortion and willing to invade sovereign nations, then a person of any religion including Christianity, who is pro choice but against invading nations.
I know people have questioned his faith and his patriotism. I wondered about this because it really did seem like a perfect opportunity for him to make a strong statement about his faith to those who still doubt it.

They will do what they have to do to get elected.
