Sometimes. Even though the number of responses is often few I can still get a general idea of what people think about something. This is truer if the subject is not too controversial. Most people here have very definite negative opinions about topics that are more progressive than they are.
Great point, but the thing is, you can get a general idea, but you're basing it on the response of like 20 - 70 people. I think the "500"(just the right amount) part is the magic number for it to be considered as the people's general idea. Thus answers the question of @jondough and @dauguy. In other words effective - are you getting the right amount of responses that you need? or are you hitting your goal of reaching this patricular number of votes and getting valuable and usable data.
