Mostly, I talk alot of nonsense to him, which as far as I can tell makes him happy (he is a cat). He is especially happy if the nonsense coincides with a good pet session on my lap.
I have guinea pigs...so they don't really respond to cuddles/attention. They respond to food and fear. So, when I talk to them in a sort of sing-songy voice, it usually means I'm bringing food. So they start squeaking (chirping/wheeking) at me, and it's really cute.
I can ask my pet if he is hungry, go outside or many other things and he will nod his head, move his eyes in the direction or tap his paws.
I could go on and on, but I must say one thing, I didn't train him, he taught me.
So try to be very observent and see if your dog is trying to communicate with you.
"...he taught me."
Yes, I've asked a similar question on Ask500Dogs, and got the same answer ;)
Thanks!

Talking nonsense to most males will get you pretty far ;)
Thanks!

It's not the talking nonsense, it is the petting session.

My friend has ratties...they don't make any sounds in the human range of hearing :(
We have to listen to them with an ultrasonic detector, like you'd use to eavesdrop on bats...
Thanks!

What frightens me, is when he talks back.
