Sure. I talk to my cat, too, but I don't think of either as understanding what I say.
Some would agree that it is not the actual words a person uses, but the feeling and tone of the communication that is most valuable in communicating with plants and animals. Others, of course, perceive the whole idea as "crazy foolishness." :-)
