You have multiple choices I could go for. 1) Older versions of Windows are better. 2) I'm also a Linux and BSD fan, though I don't use them as much as Windows. and 3) I'm a Mac fan (which is a custom version of BSD) and a Mac will be my next personal computer.
My newest pc is an eMachine that came with XP. Last year I "upgraded" it to Vista. After a while I decided to install Ubuntu instead. When Vista's SP1 came out I decided to try Vista again with SP1. After a couple of weeks I decided to install Ubuntu again. I am still thinking about putting XP back on it, but so far I'm liking Ubuntu (Linux) pretty well, so I may just leave it as it is.

but you can run Windows or Linux on Mac machine too :)

Your problem is your "emachine" you should stay with xp .
