A giant tree is growing in a field. It is measured each day to monitor its growth.

One day a man comes forward and shouts loudly:

“We’re being lied too! I have looked at the measurement data and the tree is not growing it is the same size as it was before! The trunk was 100cm width in 1998 and it only 100cm width now!” Other people read what he has said and shout also – “yes it’s a conspiracy! We have been lied to!”

But scientist come forward and says: “hang on a minute please; The size of the tree is more complex than just it’s width. What about the height? – The tree has grown upwards and outwards too. What about the growth and fall of the leaves each year? The yearly growth has got larger too. The growth of the tree is more complicated than just one set of data – you must take all things into account in order to find the total mass of the tree. And the data is free for anyone to find, read and learn – here… help yourself.”

But then a third man comes forward and says. “The tree would grow anyway! – it is all a natural process, there is nothing we can do about it – it is nothing to do with us.”

But the scientist replies: This is the largest tree on record, ever. Sure trees grow naturally, and yes – you are right, they put on mass naturally as part of a natural cycle, but this is generally offset by other processes – for example the tree may grow naturally in spring, but this is offset by the natural process of the leaves falling in autumn… However, what we are doing to the tree has no natural offsetting… you see, it’s large, recent growth spurt correlates with the exact same year that this farmer came as started to water it with nutrients. We KNOW from experiment that the nutrients he is giving it make trees grow, that is a fact. It seems reasonable to conclude that the farmer is a main cause of the growth. Once again – all this information is available for you to learn and read – help yourself, but please don’t base your opinion on the shouting man.”
