When I wrote this poll I was specifically wondering if Europeans, let's say Italians, like it when Americans try to talk to them on the Internet by typing a question in English, sending it to Google Translate, getting the Italian translation, then asking the question in Italian.

I will add here I tried doing this this morning and I think the translation program was giving me a translation for a male to male conversation when what I wanted was a male to female translation. I then tried to make the translation female by changing all the words that ended in an "o" to an "a" but I think I goofed in a big way, probably changing words that weren't supposed to be changed.

Man you should try Norwegian!

Språk er vanskelig. Det ville vært lettere hvis alle bare byttet til engelsk for min skyld. Jeg vet, jeg er veldig egoistisk.

[Languages are hard. It would be easier if everyone just switched to English for my sake. I know, I'm very selfish.]

I like any attempt at communication from both sides.

Very much agree, I even tried Finnish once... (Not that I understood what I was saying, but my Finnish audience greatly appreciated it). And when comunicating with a deaf person we ended up with a mix of spoken, written and signed language. I use a translation program to communicate with a person in Russia. I don't speak Russian and we have no other language in common - but it works somehow.

Anyone who goes to this extent to communicate gains my admiration.

I'm actually hoping to travel to Italy in the summer or fall and use Google translate all the time in IM and on Skype. I've not had anyone be rude about it and most have been helpful with correcting Google's mistakes. I think the effort to learn is quite appreciated.
