I love and admire them and could watch these little wonders of nature all day long. Few times I watched hummingbirds building their tiny nests in some rose bushes in front of our windows. They start with a single spider web(like a thread) which they weave around the stems and thorns of the rose bushes and leave many times to return with another single spider web. They filled their 'construction' with Pampus grass and such inside and out. In between they sat in the nest moving their tiny body in circles to make the nest round and smooth. Tiny and most beautiful as they are at the same time they are smart architects, fast working, skillful builders and amazing mothers. Most wonderful things to say about them.

Instead of using commercial humming bird feeders we planted bushes with red - redisch - yellowish flowers for them. They love bright colors and enjoy the always running water from above and in their shallow bird bath as well. It looks as if they sing and whistle under their shower as well. They are the earliest in the morning, take the longest showers / baths and use the most water.

Our day could not start out any more peaceful than by watching the nature around us and having breakfast at the same time. :)

Thank you for sharing!

We get about 10 different hummers at our feeder. An assortment of Costa's, Anna's, Black Chinned, Rufous, & Calliope.

Consider yourself lucky as we have never seen one making a nest although we have found them in nests.

You are very welcome, BlackOrchid.

I am sure, one day you or someone from your family will enjoy watching a Hummingbird making his nest. The place has to be quiet, almost no human and / or animal traffic, no other birds around and such. The big mistake I did: When I noticed the first time she is building her nest I was most excited, meant well and put up immediately this red feeder in the next bush for her close comfort. That was not a good thing, because now other hummingbirds saw, came and drank and disrupted the poor pregnant bird. So I took that thing away to give her peace again. I learned so very much from a very knowledgeable, friendly lady here who takes care of all sick birds at her house and works for the Zoo.

Yes, BlackOrchid, I am considering myself very lucky in many ways and am enjoying every minute of my life knowing very well my luck could run out within seconds. 99,9 % of my time I am smiling / laughing / kidding and take the small stuff not serious.

Because of your interesting response today I realized you and I are having something in common - nature. I always enjoy your beautiful orchid photos and because of your name "BlackOrchid" I

wanted to ask you several times already if you are not only an orchid lover, but own some as well? I do both - love and own.

Sorry, there is still one of your response not answered yet by me, but I will do so for sure (!!!). There is something very important for you to know. :)

OK, not a problem - I understand. You can use the same method whenever you like too.
