Cats, especially kittens, are great fun to watch but not to own. The last cat I had shredded the back of two couches sharpening his claws. I wanted to have the rascal declawed when he was a kitten but was out voted by the family - so we had over $1500 of damage because Dad was 'wrong.'
BlackOrchid I had problems with my cats (heathens) scratching the couch also. Then I discovered microfiber. The cats (heathens) do not have any fiber to get their claws hooked into. All three of my microfiber furniture are perfect. My friends four cats (heathens) do not touch her microfiber living room set either.

The only reason that I discovered microfiber was because I wanted to find furniture that is German Shepherd hair repellent. The hair just vacuums off easily and I do not have to brush, scrap, and pick to get the damn stuff up. The cats not liking to claw on it was just a big extra bonus. It was the dogs that encouraged me to get that type of furniture not the cats.
Owned by six at one time. now I am owned by one living with me and am co-owned by three others who my friend and I started bottle feeding when they were two weeks old.
I like cats, but do not own one for the reason stated above-ruining the furniture. We did have a wonderful cat (I had it de-clawed), but it got outside and disappeared. I think a coyote got it :(

Now see that is why I don't get along with cats. They allow you to live with them. I'm not going to buy a specific type couch so I can have cats.
Now dogs are your best friends. A dog would even like Waugsieboy or TheSheep but then again those would be pretty dumb dogs!

I've had 2 generations roam through our home and it is remarkable how they've tolerated me and my wife. "Like" is MUCH too weak of a word.
