I know exactly what you mean. I am very sensitive to scents as is my cat. I only light it on my porch and just let some of the scent waft in to my apartment. At work there are always gals applying lotions and perfumes and some really bother me. I also get headaches.
The one that gets me is that air freshener stuff that you plug into a socket, horrible. I found that I can stand cintronella candles which have the added bonus of (supposedly) keeping mosquitoes away.
I love the smell of incense in the shops that burn it. Unfortunately, when I burn it at home, it ends up smelling kind of stale. I do burn it in the backyard sometimes and that seems to work better.
When meditating, yes. But I'm very picky about the scent.
What do you use? I like Nag Champa the best, but I have others.
I like nag champa too, but I rarely use it.
I like incense, but any strongly perfumed stuff in the air gives me a headache, so I don't use it.

Ahh yes, I have gotten some stale batches too. I like the backyard idea.
