Go through your emails and count the McCain putdowns and the Obama putdowns. You will see the real biases of the online community show up then. The questions on ask500 pale in comparison to the great majority of very biased emails I get everyday.
There are one or two people here who are masters of question asking...often appearing to take one side or the other. You occasionally get really blatantly biased ones. I have seen a few that were pretty neutral and not taken as such. I think alot of the time the bias is in the question readers head.
I understand what you are saying. There just seems to be a good amount of bias. Especially then questions could be yes/no. But instead they are like "yes, I love the environment" or "no, I hate the world and hope it dies".
You would prefer something more unbiased like "No. God put it here for us to do with as we will, so if the environment is ruined it's God's fault"? (lol)
Here's one I thought was a little biased the other day: "Should the government be allowed to determine what "reasonable profits" are for an industry or company?" Answers were Yes or No.
This is a capitalist society - of COURSE a government should not be allowed to determine what are "reasonable profits." Perhaps a more UNBIASED poll would have been something like: "should a government have the right to rescind tax funding for corporations that turn billion dollar profits?" OR (maybe) "Should oil tapped beneath America's soil be paid for, or should oil companies be given the oil royalty free in hopes that our price at the pump falls?"
Incidentally, they're getting the oil for free from under our soil, but they're charging us $4 a gallon at the pump. In Saudi, it's under $1 a gallon.

lol - I think you like to split hairs with your conservatism. Pulling it from the ground isn't exactly 'free' - but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than ANY other way they're going to find oil.
I'll try to give you a way to think about this that might give you another point of view. Some people don't LIKE other points of view, but you say you're a fence sitter - so I'll give it a Yankee shot.
Liberals are really, really, really PISSED OFF right now. They feel as if they've been betrayed by their government, their congress and they're watching everything they hold dear about the Constitution ERODED. And they're watching those who claim to be 'conservative' run up debts our great-great-great grandchildren will repay. We've watched solid middle class jobs disappear overseas (so their former employers can pay near slave wages in financially destitute countries) and watched that VERY CONSERVATIVE government brag that they're CREATING jobs. Yeah. They're creating jobs that pay a FRACTION of what the disappearing jobs pay. And the "liberal media" says nothing - makes no comparison about wages, but does make mention of job disappearing overseas. And then the CONSERVATIVES rage about the 'liberal media' getting everybody upset about jobs disappearing.
Just try this: Liberals say NASTY things about this administration because they've REALLY fucked up our lives and our world. I don't know about EVERYbody - but I'm one HELL of a lot worse off than I was 7 years ago!
Conservatives still want to blame liberals for everything that's going wrong BUT, since conservatives have had control of virtually everything for the last seven years ... blaming the LIBERALS for this country's woes actually SOUNDS as lame as it IS. Even CONSERVATIVES can hear how stupid they sound. Christ - they still like to talk about disappearing cigars and blow jobs.
So while you're sitting around going "gee - all the liberals say nasty thing compared to the conservatives ..." maybe you should take a deep breath and realize it's because only the LIBERALS are pissed off at this government and it's attempted destruction of the greatest country on the face of the earth. And I, as someone who loves my country - am REALLY pissed about that.

I apologize - it wasn't you who said you were a fence sitter - it was Jonmarc. Second off - as an often times fence sitter, I don't have a problem with fence sitters. And I can tell YOU exactly were I stand on tons of issues, too. But I also don't make a decision lightly. Sometimes - especially on the unimportant things - I wait and look at which idiots jump to which side of the fence. Then I base my decision upon the logic presented by those who have already taken a position. Some take positions they don't even really believe in JUST so they can fight. Rather pathetic, but they do.
I also just realized that half my reply above was directed at Jonmarcs opinion. I missed the fact that those were from two different members. So half of what I just blew at you wasn't intended for you. oops. (lol) Sorry - I'm usually better than that. Must be getting late.
It is a legitimate question. And, as a business owning capitalist, an issue I certainly hold a strong opinion on. And I gave you an example of a less biased question that spoke to the oil industry profits debate in my reply above.
Those were the ones I classified under "blatantly biased", lol...to be differentiated by the nonsensical ones, like my rather brilliant "how now brown cow?" question. Too brilliant for most of the rabble on this website; it never got voted up. ;-)
What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like
My pardon; the "rabble" was for Sillynilly, stoplookingatme, wingnut, waugs, dauguy, chipmonk, and the others on this website who are friendly and like to play, and hopefully for Cdog (I suspect he likes to play too).
The "abusive" was for you after you started flaming my commentary two days after it had been posted for the above named.
"I pray you bear me henceforth from the noise and rumour of the field, where I may think the remnant of my thoughts in peace, and part of this body and my soul with contemplation and devout desires."
I don't think the questions are biased. Many of the answers are and there are a few people here that constantly down comments because they don't fit with the way they think, that is what is biased. Keep this in mind; what one thinks is biased, another doesn't. Everybody has there own opinions of what is and what isn't biased.
I just ran through todays questions...the majority of them are completely non political. (everything from "do you swallow" to "ever have a song in your head", etc etc). I am going to have to run through historical questions sometime and really look at what I find, see if my theory on "the bias is in the reader" holds up.
Exactly...I was surprised by how many fun questions there were though...my own eyes tend to skip over the ones that don't really interest me, and I forget about them quickly, while I'll mull over interesting ones for hours sometimes.
Sure they're biased, and most people want everyone to agree with them, and if people don't agree they ask the same question again and again, only they'll rephrase it again and again until they finally word it just the right way so as many people as possible agree. `Just a tad biased maybe, but you understand, right? =]
Some are, and some aren't. It just depends on the person who creates the poll and the polling subject.

My question was pulled directly from the article though. I didn't enhance or change it at all. The bias, if there was any, was from the article.
And getting the from the ground is hardly free.

I understand why the Liberals are so mad. I don't necessarily agree with a portion of it. But I understand.
Where did I say was a fence sitter? I can tell you exactly what I think on tons of positions.

Oh - and "well ... I wasn't being biased, the guy I was quoting was biased" is a lame attempt to cover your ass while trying to CLAIM you're unbiased.
So, how would you have asked my Profits question. It is certainly a legitimate question.

You DO know what a "winky face" emoticon means, don't you?

As we were saying in another recent post, bias is often in the eyes of the reader.

" pray thee cease thy counsel,
Which falls into mine ears as profitless
as water in a sieve."
Most people get together where they are comfortable. It's a very natural, human tendency.
This resonance shows up in many questions, sometimes very unintentionally.

I think I should have specified serious/political questions. Its hard to consider many of the fun questions as biased.
