Less so on the internet. I can't type very well to start with, and have a muscular disorder that makes it difficult to type for more than a paragraph or two. Since I would like a little slack in that area, I try and offer it to others.

I'm asking because it's my job to spruce up communications and I was genuinely wondering if my skills are becoming defunct in the internet age? PS I occasionally have RSI and use voice recognition to write long features... the bad spelling on there drives me crazy!

I'm not a perfectionist by any means, but really bad usage does bother me. The point of writing is to communicate, after all. When the writer is trying, but foreign, an excuse is warranted, but English speakers, really should be able to come close.

It does bother me but I try and understand that some people don't type well or could be dyslexic or using English as a second language. I wouldn't ever assume the mantle of Grammar Nazi and comment on it unless the question or comment was so badly written it was genuinely impossible for me to glean an interpretation. I find it really quite patronising for people to focus on that without any cause other than to point out the mistake.

True but then again would you be happy 'gleaning' the meaning from a medical advice booklet or airline emergency procedure? I reckon relax in personal communications but keep it clean on the professional stuff. Then again I'll edit my emails so I can't help myself :)

Ahh sorry, I was referring specifically to the internet and forums such as this one. I see I didn't mention that. Any kind of "official" communication or publications such as those you mentioned it's far less forgiveable to be lax with spelling and grammar.

I was reading about a university professor who advocates less emphasis on proper use of English - the man is a plonker.

Funnily enough, I did a module at uni on how to teach and tutor in writing. Spelling/grammar errors were considered low grade for marking wrong next to those of argument and structure. But then it was a pretty multicultural uni with a massive influx of Polish students. No excuses for the English though - some even used textspeke in their essays. Or am I just being old-fashioned!

Good grammar, punctuation and spelling shows an attention to detail, education and an over-all desire to communicate clearly and effectively. I do think those things are important NOT simply for what they are but because they convey and reflect something of the character of the person who is doing the communicating. Perhaps basing your entire opinion of whether the person has any viable ideas is a bit snobbish - but I will give more credit to the author of a blog that's better written. Shows they've but a bit more thought into the entire process. Ideas, opinions and punctuation included. (lol)

I could not agree with you more. I find it sad that those of us who militate in favour of proper English for the very reasons that you have mentioned should find ourselves under attack for holding this position.

Shows they've but a bit more thought ???????? Looks like a little more may have been in order silly?? ;))

See what happens when I don't edit?? (lol)

"Yes always." is missing punctuation.

Duly noted - but no option to edit! Besides, that's my day job ;-)
