There is nothing good about what he did. In terms of the after effect on humanity's development since, even the most open-minded person will find little good in what resulted. IMO, by any reasonable standard, the answer would have to be a resounding "no".

[sarcasm on] As great and important as these achievements are [sarcasm off], I don't believe they rise to the level of having a significant effect on humanity's development.

But you said "by any reasonable standard." The idea of developing an automobile which was affordable to the "average" citizen has certainly had an impact on all of us since then.
Good golly Ms. Molly...Detroit certainly doesn't think so! Every time they are asked why they don't build economical cars, they tell us because Americans won't buy them! (they may be right...)
I think Henry Ford had alot more to do with making autos affordable in the US, though, didn't he?
I seriously doubt any of those ideas were ACTUALLY Hitler's. The Incas had highways (some paved, if I'm not mistaking), laying throughout the jungles of Peru. The Roman highways throughout Europe placed chariot wheel ruts so deeply into the landscape that it became the standard wheel base - trains, wagons, etc. So Hitler can't be given credit for the idea of a highway. Maybe a paved highway across GERMANY - but it doesn't stand as a unique concept at all.
And I certainly doubt that VW was Hitler's idea, either. I suspect someone came up with it, and it was suggested as an idea for him to present to the people as his own. Or maybe he just TOOK the idea after it was suggested by one of his Brown Shirts. And we all know what happened to them.

I really don't think cheap cars and good freeways justify the slaughter of millions of men, women, and children. Let;s just build the road bed over their bodies and put up sign, shall we?
I never said they did... I was simply responding to the assertion that Hitler was TOTALLY evil and NOTHING he did was good. After all, the man loved his dogs, and anyone who loves their dogs can't be ALL bad. ;o)
He gave them back national pride after the defeat in WWI and the terrible years after. I think sometimes when a culture's pride is at stake people get so wrapped up in their patriotism they don't see how rotten their government actually is.
I suppose the comments regarding the Volkswagen and the Autobahn bring up the question of whether his tainted motives for doing these things make them bad things in the long run. They were intended to make his country ready for war and to turn his people into compliant sheep (sorry TheSheep, I am in no way suggesting all sheep are compliant, just the ones in this comment). The building of the Autobahn improved the transport infrastructure and created jobs, the cars again created jobs and gave people a sense that here was a government that was providing luxury....not many years before a loaf of bread cost hundreds of billions of mostly worthless marks.
So, if you take the stance that everything he did was in preparation for the execution of his plan to take over the world and create a master race, along the way wiping out all traces of those undesirables who might taint his Aryan utopia, then pretty much nothing that he did was right. He was even too cowardly to face justice, scrote.
But we did get to watch his reaction to Jesse Owens. Ah - one of the greatest moments in world history. Watching Hitler get up and walk off the viewing stand.
One of my favorite claims to fame: my mother met Jesse Owens once! How pathetic a claim is that? But it's still one of my very favorites! (lol)
Oh - and just when you think maybe the whole world will see Jesse Owen as proof of equality amongst races, check out this clip on youtube. The clip is short, but click "more info" about the clip and have a quick read. (sigh)
Thanks for those, shame about the vile commentary on the last vid but cool Jesse Owens footage. I'm afraid the message that was important, that he faced terrible discrimination at home, was kinda lost in the tide of Nazi Holocaust denial propaganda.

Really? Do you think that the Autobahn is a bad thing? Do you think Volkswagens were a bad thing?

I dunno. 'Sheep has a good point. Henry Ford pre-dated Dr. Porsche (of VW fame). He also came up with the whole assembly-line thing.
How much did a Ford cost in 1940? How much did a Volkswagen cost in 1940?
You can just tell me. I'll take you're word for it.
dunno, but my dad's first car cost $200!
Brand new?
I don't think so...but it was back in the 1940's...;-)

Haystack. Exactly!
If you slice the whole f-ing thing out of world history I don't see what would go wrong.

That's ok, thanks for telling me though!
Which thing that Hitler did? Building the autobahn? Right. Volkswagen? Right. Genocide? Not so right.
ding ding ding ding ding
Kinda like Mussolini, another well known maniac butcher. "At least he made the trains run on time".
No, but he had an overwhelming amount of support from the German people at the time.
So what are you saying here?
Maybe she's saying he couldn't have done it without their help. :-)
