Just because there are great differences does not mean either is honest or good. Mostly all USA politicians are for sale to the highest bidder which tends to exclude the people who vote for them.
Interesting question, and well phrased. Both parties didn't get to be the most popular by being extreme. They both appeal to the most americans, just from slightly different sides of the middle. That is the only way to explain why you can have liberal Republicans, and conservative Democrats.
Yes, Republicans want to put you in jail if you have an abortion and Democrats want to put you in jail if you have a firearm. Maybe the only difference that matters.
