Religion is man trying to do something to attain a God like level. Their is a way that seems right to man, but the end of those ways is death. Those ways are the ways of religion. no way that any man can get into Heaven by being religious. John 14:6 says it all. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The Jews believed they were keeping the will of God by following the laws of moses and "their father Abraham" , and said they loved Abraham, but if they loved Abraham, then they would have done what Abraham did and listen to God, they would have loved Jesus and not have stayed as slaves to their own sin.
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, 'You will be made free'?"Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
"And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
"Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
"I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
"I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with[fn12] your father."
They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.
"But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
"You do the deeds of your father." Then they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father--God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me.
"Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.
"You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
"But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.
"Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?
"He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God."
Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?"
Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
"And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death."
Thats all taken the the book of John Chapter 8.
In this case, the Jewish people decided to follow their own religious ways, and Jesus called them the children of the devil. that should put everything into perspective. All people have an option to repent form their fleshly ways and turn toward the ways of God while they are alive, and are by grace breathing the air that God has made for them, through the lungs that God has made for them, or, they can decide to reject God and try to follow the ways of their own making or beliefs, and wonder why they are not in heaven when they die. These words may seem strange now, but some will remember them while being tormented.

The really troublesome part is that almost every different religion will show you their own scriptures that attest their path to righteousness is the only way, and many are willing to kill to prove it. Something is rotten in Denmark methinks.

Heaven is a useful incentive to compliance for those who are either simple minded or just plain greedy for their own salvation. Religion (along with patriotism) is the best way to get people to go along with immoral ideas (bigotry, intolerance, etc.), and commit actions en masse that, stripped of their patriotic or religious costuming, would be baldy, unforgivably atrocious (wars, torture, persecution, etc.).
This is way before my time, but I have to put it here anyway:

I hate to put it this way cause I know it will cause hate and discontent within the bosum of the "true believers".
Heaven is an imaginary place created by a person with a fertile mind ... as in Science Fiction, it is an invention of man's wish that there is something "more" after death.
IF you subscribe to the thought that there is more to life than that which we see around us ... IF you believe there is a continuation of the spirit after it has departed the body ... THEN ... you CAN imagine the possibilty there is more than one road to this place.
