I have a very hard time believing that this is a true statement for several reasons.
During the time of the American Civil war there were about 4 million legal slaves in the US...probably a good number of illegal slaves AND there were still forms of slavery in China, the middle east, Africa and a lot of the Caribbean islands, and south east Asia. Unless there were a credible link to your statement, I would have to say that your professor is probably slightly exaggerating the situation. LOL...not unusual for a college professor to be honest.
Today’s slavery focuses on big profits and cheap lives. It is not about owning people like before, but about using them as completely disposable tools for making money.
Ok, ok....now that we are clearly talking about taking advantage of people and not real slavery I would like to back completely out of the conversaion.....backing out....backing out...
No, I think it is a bad thing but not the same. The person working for no or little money still has basic human rights such as choosing their own mate, the right to not get beaten to death, ect....
I agree though I have to say it is probably a sliding scale between the one and the other. Once you are in a situation where you are completely financially exploited and dependent, those other freedoms can easily become compromised.
Link??
Sorry - Word of mouth from a respected teacher. If anyone has one though, I'd be happy to see it.
