I remember (with horror) the moment I first told my daughter something I swore I would never say to my own child. I apologized later, telling her that I must have been channeling dead ancestors. This did not reassure her, and she had nightmares for the next two nights...

We talked about that one in class in college. Besides all of us, there was a Japanese girl, a Chinese boy, and Iranian boy and a South African girl in our class. All four of them had THEIR parents say it to them, too!

Do as I say, not as I do! (frequently, on a range of subjects, smoking being just one)
The response is always something like,
'Well you did it and it didn't hurt you!'
Finally on a trip to Vegas, I pointed out a high-roller, 'See, there's a winner, now...'
then later, observed a homeless pan-handler, 'and there's somebody who gambled and lost...you have to weigh the odds and risks you're willing to take..."
