Community: How can we help get more traffic to this site so the questions don't take so long? Ask a Question

4 Answers

Traffic slows down over the weekend, things should pick back up on Monday. Giving it the thumbs-up in Stumble certainly helps and being mentioned in blogs as well. Thanks for the help!

I think it is mainly about two points:

1) Languages.

It is important to offer at least two or three more languages. I think there are enough excited people in the community who are willing to assist (like me for German). There should be overall questions that are available on all language versions an such that are country (or language) specific.

Once you have French and German in you have the opportunity to place polls on the big (mail) portals such as Wanadoo.fr, Web.de or Libero.it - their traffic is enourmous and you can really get new people to the community. Also, widgets should include the googlemaps-preview to show that it is not only about boring charts.

2) Moderation.

Questions need to be moderated in a better way. There are too many similar questions like on the Iraq war etc. ask500prople.com needs a tool that enables users to figure out if their question has already been discussed. Of course, the results will be different some weeks later but somehow there should be at least some days between two very similar questions. I am sure you will find a way.

What do the others think?

Thanks for a great comment. Regarding languages, an idea we've been tossing around is a way to allow the community to translate questions into other languages. Since the site is visual it's possible people can enjoy it and participate in the voting, even if they don't understand English very well. Perhaps rather than translating the entire site and maintaining it, we'd just support translating a few key features like questions and answers. I was thinking we could try it out with German initially and see if it takes off, and if it works replicate across to other languages.

If your browser is set to use German, it's possible we could do much of this using content negotiation so we wouldn't even need de.ask500people.com More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_negotiation

I agree the questions need more moderation. There are a few solutions but one which the community can do already is to not vote up questions which have run recently. (This is already happening to some degree. It seemed we ran Mac vs PC questions once a day at one point, and I haven't seen one too recently...)

We must do more publicity on our own websites, boards and work...=)
