A poll performed by Peter Doran and Maggie Kendall Zimmerman at Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago received replies from 3,146 of the 10,257 polled Earth scientists. Results were analyzed globally and by specialization. 76 out of 79 climatologists who "listed climate science as their area of expertise and who also have published more than 50% of their recent peer-reviewed papers on the subject of climate change" believe that mean global temperatures have risen compared to pre-1800s levels, and 75 out of 77 believe that human activity is a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures. Among all respondents, 90% agreed that temperatures have risen compared to pre-1800 levels, and 82% agreed that humans significantly influence the global temperature. Economic geologists and meteorologists were among the biggest doubters, with only 47 percent and 64 percent, respectively, believing in significant human involvement.
A summary from the survey states that: It seems that the debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes.
I agree with you, that to all people in the know climate change is down to us. However I did not ask this question to asstain for myself if it is happening but to find out the view of others as to weather or not it is...maybe i should have worded the question better.
You cannot deny the corrlation between co2 levels and tempurature rise. You also cannot deny that the human race are the ones responsible for putting it ip there and therefore we must do our best to reduce it, if only for out children. We must make sure that they live in a world where there is still land to live on and without the fear of freak weather that our actions have caused.

Yes we can deny that. There is no definitive proof that the CO2 levels actually cause a rise in temperature. I saw a study that said only 8% of the CO2 in the atmosphere is responsible for warming the planet. Since, only 8% of the total 4% that is generated by man is affecting the planets temp I don't think it is really having any measurable effect. So yes, I would deny that humans are responsible for putting all of it up there. The world is not going to end tomorrow.
Wikipedia has some numbers if you don't already have them. "Naturally occurring greenhouse gases have a mean warming effect of about 33 °C (59 °F). The major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36–70 percent of the greenhouse effect; carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes 9–26 percent; methane (CH4), which causes 4–9 percent; and ozone (O3), which causes 3–7 percent. Clouds also affect the radiation balance, but they are composed of liquid water or ice and so are considered separately from water vapor and other gases." -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming#Greenhouse_gases
I was really just wondering where that 8% figure came from. I found that source I linked to, but I find it hard to believe anyone finds it credible, what with the author not knowing what kind of radiation is emitted by the sun or when the "last ice age" was.
Politics does come into it but it's more of a football for fringe parties rather than the big three which are all committed to positive action to aid the environment - the devil is in the details of how it is done really. Specific environmental policies create political discussion, but I don't feel that the main debate as a whole is political. What is political is that many tabloids have taken a stance against Gordon Brown (it's election year) and GB is strident in his wish to have Britain at the forefront of environmental reforms. Consequently, the tabloids take an anti-AGW stance, but usually along a science tack. That and the Climategate furore has definitely had the effect of reducing public acceptance of climate change. (Oh, and the record snowfalls this winter don't help either. If I had a penny for every weather =/= climate....).
Yeah, the weather/climate debate is stupid, over here we have had far less snow then normal and January was one of the warmest months in recorded history. Of course that is no more proof that the earth is warming then the the record snow falls in the UK is proof that it isn't warming.
Global warming will cause colder weather for the uk, because it will effect the gulf stream (ice melts) which supplies the uk with it's warmth. The uk based on latitude should be simlar to other northen contries
Do you really think that an industry which has testified to Congress that its primary purpose is entertainment, and that it sees no wrongdoing with in deliberately lying to the public in support of that goal, is a good source for scientific information? Oh, and an industry which actually received a state Supreme Court decision that firing reporters for airing the truth was not illegal?
The atmosphere acts like a blanket. Altering the mix of materials we use to make blankets alters the thermal conductivity of those blankets, why should this be different for the atmosphere?
That doesn't answer my question. If it's acting like a thermal blanket would in not keep out the same amount of heat from the sun as it does keeping it in?
What is so hard to comprehend? The earth is currently 33 °C (59 °F) warmer with the "thermal blanket" then it would be without. So how effective do you think the atmosphere is functioning as a "thermal blanket"?
Well, that isn't an entirely true statement. I have since realized that magic CO2, when it hits a certain critical concentration, turns every dead thing on the planet into zombies--the Zombie Apocalypse, if you will. And it appears that the concentration will reach that critical point on December 12, 2012. ;0)
Of course not. Haven't you heard of MAGIC CO2? It is what is released from burning fossil fuels when those are burned by humans, and has no impact whatsoever on the atmosphere or the environment, It is MAGIC, like all the other greenhouse gases humans release! ;-).
The "climate/weather" has been changing since the beginning of time....so what? Contrary to those who want to make money with snake oil solutions, man can not control everything in the world. It's extreme arrogance on the part of man.
But we can change the weather, for instance we seed clouds to make it rain in a particular area. The vapour trails from airplanes block the sunlight and have a measurable short term cooling effect.
Yes, the climate changes, in fact in Texas it changes four times a year. It is called Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring but the changes are not man made,,, it has been doing it for a long long time.

It is ok, thanks for explaining.

So are you happy to continue to use up the wrolds resorces to a damaging effect?
No the world is not going to end tomorrow, nobody sensible asserts that.
Got a link to the study you mention?
It's not this one is it: http://www.nov55.com/ntyg.html ?

Strangely enough in the U.S. this is a political issue, not a science one, how is does the media treat it in the U.K.?

I don't have a link for this. The information was from a tv show about the sun on the science channel or Discovery channel.
Oh ok, thanks.

It was a science show about the sun. There was no political agenda for the show so I'm not sure what your point is.
The atmosphere acts like a blanket. Altering the mix of materials we use to make blankets alters the thermal conductivity of those blankets, why should this be different for the atmosphere?
If the atmosphere is acting like a thermal blanket would it not work both ways?
Without the "thermal blanket" the earth would be 33 °C (59 °F) cooler.

Magic CO2 doesn't cause any changes in the atmosphere or any part of the environment.
Lol.
