I am a teacher in a public school. MANY of my students have been "diagnosed" with ADHD because they are simply hyperactive or are just easily distractable because of influences outside of school. School can be simply too slow for the speed in which we live now. Amazing how when these students sit at a computer for certain lessons how focused they can be. They are truly over drugged and over diagnosed. That is not to say that some of them truly are ADHD. I know this is a very controversial subject, however when one works with kids for 6 hours a day, it becomes quite obvious. Are doctors being pushed to make this diagnosis?
Less trouble?! Who are you kidding? We have kids changing meds every two weeks...they're up, down and in between... Kids who are or who are not less trouble, at least for me, is not why I teach.
Same as gnie3512 but in Australia. I believe there are real instances out there, however, I also believe that it is over diagnosed. Many students who simply have behaviour issues or heaps going on at home, are simply said to have ADD or ADHD. I think once a child is 'labeled' it is easier for them not to have to fulfill consequences for their actions and it becomes an excuse for poor behaviour. I guess sometimes it just seems 'easier' to label a student or patient rather than dealing with the real problems.
I just hate how the parents try to blame everything on the fact the child has ADHD , my step sister had ADHD and she stole things and lied about everything but it was okay because she had ADHD?
