The very concept of poverty depends on being in a non-egalitarian society. So unless we decide to design our communities with the kind of egalitarianism found in hunter-gatherer societies, it is ineradicable. But we need to be very aware that it is OUR CHOICE to design our communities in that fashion, not a law of nature.

Not as long as we reward people for keeping themslves in "so called" poverty.
That's really a good point, a large portion of "so called" poverty in the U.S. is perception. Last year I was was unemployed and when I filed my taxes I realized my family's total income last year was 14 K, but by no means am I in poverty, I just didn't make much money due to a slow economy. I had reserves, I had help from friends, and I did a lot of cutting back, but we are not in poverty. When I think of poverty, I think of people on food stamps and welfare, but I qualified for all that. It's really what are you willing to do for yourself. A person in poverty is unable, or unwilling to provide for himself and his family.

Somehow being unemployed for a year and half despite excellent skills and looking for work every day moderate his attitude. It wasn't like that was the first hard times he's seen; it wasn't. It was just the one that was hard enough to re-introduce him to reality.
Thanks, Malthus. Thanks.
I do love his philosophy on this subject.
