Calendar seasons are used in most East European countries and Russia. All the seasons starts on a first day of the months of Equinoxes and Solstices. That means that seasons in this countries starts 21 or 22 days earlier depending on the year.
well that's why we have the Gregorian calendar. Because here spring stars on 1st of march and the pope saw seasons don't correspond to the calendar anymore. Europe has this standard for determining seasons since Cesar introduces the Julian calendar back in 46BC
that's how it was with the Romans. Most probably didn't understand astronomy back then, and people are a bit conservative over here when it comes to this kind of things. I find it irrational as well.
Or maybe back when the Julian calendar was adopted spring really started in the 1st of march, I don't really know.
All Gregory XIII wanted to do is bring bring easter back in sinc. maybe he neglected the astronomic sinc alltogether.
It's so complicated to calculate now...
