Burma
As I understand it, the words are an attempt to transliterate the southeast Asian name of the country that's about halfway between the pronunciations of each of these. Wikipedia calls it "mjəmà" in phonetics. "Myanmar" wasn't a renaming so much as an attempt to be more precise.
Why does it matter what the Burmese call themselves? We don't call Germany Deutschland or Spain España, after all... I can tell you at least that Norwegians don't mind Norge being called Norway, or even Noruega.
It doesn't matter. I was just pointing out that the words come from the same source.
If you are asking which name is preferred, I choose Burma.
I don't really care, but "Burma Shave" sounds better to me than "Myanmar Shave." :)
Yep, by the time you pronounced Myanmar in your head, the rest of the signs will have long passed by.
