The number of people asked is not critical, down to about 10-12. There is a special set of equations for doing statistical analysis on small populations--less than about 35.
Two big reasons why not:
1. The questions are poorly constructed, and, since you are limited to only one, cannot be validated by other questions within the same survey.
2. The respondants are not properly selected or described.
Plus I don't think they actually ask 500 people.

Depends on how detailed you wish to get.
You can get as valid a response on this site as any other polling site. You just have to think out your questions and answers.
