I'd say no, but not for the reason you mention.
I'd say no because science fairs are a lot more interesting for everyone when all the kids that are involved actually like doing this.
Having people complaining that they would rather be doing something else and that science is boring ruins the atmosphere for everyone, may it be the visitors or the other students.
I also think science fairs are a great way for students to meet people who share s similar point of interest, and having all their usual (often uninterested) schoolmates around them would make it harder.
I think it really works, I mangaged to get all the way to State with a really dumb project and got to miss a whole week of school :)
