Though my sample of USians may be biased, I have to say there are a lot of really well educated USians here in Silicon Valley.
When I came down here, I was expecting everyone to be mean and stupid. I found quite the opposite. In the Bay Area, anyway, everyone is friendly and quite well informed.
Not that different, over here we do get new less sensational then in the US and watch America making mistake after mistake but try to copy the good things.
Not sure what an original thought is to be honest, 6 billion people in this world, hard to tell who is the first to come up with one anymore.
But Canada has shown it is capable to be different from the USA and still be successful. Independent analysis shows Canada scores higher in the Human Development Index (Canada is 3, USA 15) I am not using those numbers to boast, I am using them to show how prejudiced people are. Don't argue the points on accepted facts, but on "feelings"
Canada is lucky that it is not "leading" the world and can therefor pick what works and what does not.
I think there are fewer differences between Vancouverites and Californians than there are between Vancouvites and Torontonians. Or Calgarians, for that matter.
I grew up in Vancouver and went to grad school in Calgary. Now I live in San Francisco. Some comments:
(0) A lot of the original settlers in Vancouver were from San Francisco. After the gold rush here, there was one in BC and the businesses followed. As a result, there is a very similar feel between the two cities.
(1) People make fun of me for saying 'out' and 'mode'. Also they can't tell the difference between when I say 'couch' and 'coach'.
(2) People think I am uber-polite, because I will apologise for being in the way if someone steps on my foot ;). However, I know many Canadian a**h*les, and many polite Californians.
(3) Completely anecdotal, but I think that the average Californian is better informed about US politics than the average (Western-) Canadian is about Canadian politics.
(4) Californians are jealous of the Canadian Health care system.
(5) Californians are far more fascinated by celebrity gossip than British Columbians or Albertans.
(6) There isn't nearly enough uber-fandom for the San Jose Sharks. I miss the fact that everyone has a Canucks/Flames flag on their car when those teams are in the playoffs.
(7) Californians can't drive in the rain. Neither can Calgarians, though, so....
(8) The ethnic mix is a bit different down here. There are more Mexicans, Indians and black people. In Vancouver, there are more Sikhs and east Asians.
(9) The geek factor is about the same here as it is in Vancouver, but it's not quite as high in Calgary. Calgary is about oil and cows.
(10) People all through the west tend to be very outdoorsy. However, down here there's more water sports in the summer, and hiking in the winter.

I think that Canadians are a sturdy people because of their climate and may compare better to Alaskans that the rest of the US in their survival skills. However, I would argue whether or not they are better educated. I think we are more alike than not. I will say I never met a Canadian that I didn't like but there are a few on ask500 that regularly are rude. I would say they may be the exception rather than the rule.
The gaps are not large though and both are well above the 0.8. But if I were an American I would be more concerned that the USA is dropping and think if that trend can and needs to be reversed.
yes, absolutely yes. Canadians are far more gracious than the majority of Americans...and you can tell simply by reading some of the outrageous comments in this forum.
I do agree that people seem different, to some degree in Vancouver versus Toronto versus Nova Scotia, but that is true in the US also. Are people the same in Columbus, Ohio versus Alabama versus California? No, there is a great deal of variance.
Have you met the majority of Americans? What a ridiculous statement. Narrow that down to the Americans YOU know.
If I were to judge Canadians by the ones I see posting on this forum, I would have a low opinion of Canada. I have met Canadians in several countries and know these forum posters do not fairly represent Canada.
Better manners, better educated

I love Canada - I'm a dual citizen and thought it would be intesting to see people's perspectives on the two countries.

Better education.
Probably because they receive their quality medical care in the USA.
We are having a problem here in Ontario to many Americans coming over using the free health care system here.

Yes, I miss it terribly.
Awww! Come visit :).
Wish I could. Maybe in two or three years, if the economy recovers.
Can I come too? I swear I'll be quiet and good! (Besides, I want to visit my old house and see all my friends...)
Yaay! Party time :).
Yes. They would probably type ".... different FROM Americans".
Vive la difference!!!
I don't know, but I inagine that Canadians are from Canada and Americans are from USA.
We are from Canadia, dummy ;). At least that's what Americans keep telling me[1].
[1] No, they don't seriously think that. They just like to make fun of me.

Come on now April, not ALL Americans are idiots.
Thank you!
Another comment that proves you are not a Christian.
*nuzzle*
Aren't Canadians Americans? I thought "American" was not exclusive to US citizen.
Assuming this is the case, generally Canadians are fine examples of Americans. But different? I don't know.

Unable to have original thoughts?

I learned to drive in Tacoma, and I also find that Californians can't drive in the rain.
For me, they are...
better social values
Bullshit.
well, that sums it up....lol You illustrated my point perfectly.

If they have any money they spend winters in Florida. :)
I have never been there, but I hear it is nice.
The Canada is ranked higher (5th) then the USA (20th) in education http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Index
In the human development index the difference is smaller (Canada 4, USA 12) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index

No. Canadians are North Americans too! :-)
