I completely agree. Be a parent and raise your own kids. Take some responsibility. It is a shame how people expect the police and the schools these days to raise their kids. We pay the police our hard earned tax dollars to protect us not discipline your kids for you.
Illegal yes. But it is a class c misdameanor in the states, if they dont have over an ounce, it is the same as crossing a street outside of a cross walk or going 5 miles over the speed limit. Now if they have over an ounce of weed that is a different story. They are either selling or need to go to rehab. But I highly doubt her children had that much pot. The police have much more seriouse issues to deal with than this petty crime that should be handled by the parents. Dont warn them 4 times. Punish them the first time and let the police spend their time on real criminals that are harming society
My parents had a rule -- no smoking in the house -- so they never would have found themselves in this situation. I would have been happy to smoke outside if it would keep peace in the family.
Yes, what I smoked would have mattered to them, so that's yet another reason I'd have done it outside. No need to get their goat (i.e., rile them) when it wasn't necessary to do so. Kids need to at least have that much respect for their parent's wishes ~ to not do it right under their noses. :)

No warnings were necessary - it's illegal and if someone finds it in your home, you would be prosecuted. I called the first time with my son and demanded they bring the drug dog to sniff out anything. He resented me for it, but it was the only ethical option.
even though being illegal, i think the best thing you could do, as long as you teens are not smuggling pot, would be talking seriously to them about pot's harm to their bodies as well as the drug dealing problems related to consuption. If one or both insist in smoking then i'd try to keep an eye on them to see wether they're addicted or just using it seldomly just as some people would have a booze. If the 1st case was happening THEN i'd take them to rehab...
Thinking about some articles i've read recently, the biggest problem on marijuana is buying it from dealer, who can offer stronger and more dangerous stuff...
Depends. Have you taken a look at what is happening in juveni9le detention facilities all over the country, especially those run by for-profit companies? Do you want those things to happen to your children? Do you think it is an appropriate punishment for indulging in an activity that has NEVER been proven to be harmful? Did you try counseling first?
This a POLICE STATE!!! Why would you voluntarily turn your CHILDREN over to it?
The best way to cure them of this is to go join them and smoke up all their stuff. They don't want to have any part of your habit; it won't be cool anymore.
It was not right. It is the parents job to discipline their kids, not the cops. So now, in part due to not doing your job in raising and disciplining your kids, you have helped to give them a criminal record that will stay with them.
Rather than call the cops, ground them. Take away any and all their privileges. If you can't get them to stop, there are bigger problems.
For everyone who thinks calling the police on your kids was okay/correct simply because they were doing something illegal; would you call the police if you found them: illegally parked? Rolling a stop sign? Not paying income tax from their summer job baby-sitting?

MOST PEOPLE ABOVE HAVE EITHER NO SENSE OF WHAT LIFE IS LIKE IN THE WEST, OR THEY DONT HAVE TEENAGE CHILDREN. TEENS CAN REALLY BE IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL, ESPECIALLY IF THE LAW THREATENS YOU WITH "CHILD ABUSE" IF YOU TRY AND DISCIPLINE THE CHILD TOO MUCH. YOU DID THE PERFECT THING. AS THE LAW TRIES TO STOP YOU FROM DISCIPLINING YOUR OWN CHILDREN THEN IT IS RIGHT THAT THEY SHOULD DEAL WITH THIS PROBLEM.

You make a valid point. I know many parents who are threatened with a call to child services when they try and discipline their kids. I know one guy that was arrested and ended up in therapy for pulling his teen off of his wife during an argument.
I don't think you should have brought the police into this situation. A family shouldn't do that to each other. I wouldn't call the police on my mother and I wouldn't want her to call the police on me.
But you should be more strict, there shouldn't be "warnings" for things like smoking pot. Confiscate things from them and take regular drug tests, ask their teachers to watch their behaviour etc. Get more involved. They clearly can't take care of themselves if they don't have the judgemental abilities to say no to pot.
Edit: Don't forget to educate them on pot, or ask one of their teachers to do it for you if they happen to think you're clueless about pot (teenagers like to think they know more than their parents about certain things including drugs, technology and socializing).
If all else fails - don't be afraid to send them to drug rehab.

My parents would not have given me any warning.

Oh i don't know about that, smoking pot is illegal (i assume) so getting the police is perfectly justifiable

For an infraction like smoking pot? Absolutely not.
Is he old enough to toss out of the house instead? If he can afford pot, he can start affording his own rent.

I'm assuming that you do not know that typing in all caps is equivalent to screaming at someone?

You just wanted the pot for yourself(!)
Why the fuss ? Most Americans are avid users of pot, and as every day goes by more governmental entities are legalizing it or decriminalizing.
Would you call the police on your teens if they were smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol ? They are also illegal activities.
