I personally am OK (in for the long-term, didn't borrow, won't be selling, no exposure to banks or lending institutions). But NZers as a mass are total panickers - in 97 our market fell further than anyone's. So we could be in for a ski-slope of a decline. SIGH.
unfortunatly, our cultural influence has been like an infection throughout the world. We have left our imprint on so many other societies. Sad really. And it is just catching on in some other countries. Domino effect, anyone?
Only the doom and gloomers believe the decline of America is in free fall. Just as we weathered the stock market collapse in '29' and the lean years that followed, this hiccough we are facing today will also pass.
America is still the greates nation on Earth ... if it wasn't why does so much of the world want to move here?
American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the Marianas are not becoming independent anytime soon. The empire looks pretty sturdy.
The United States is more than a territorial empire. It is (or was) an economic and cultural empire as well. Those two are what is falling.
agree.
The sub-prime debacle is affecting the stock-market here! The US is still an ENORMOUS economic power, though you may be right about the decline.
Disagree about any cultural fade though. US music, TV and movies are still hugely influential, influence increasing rather than declining I'd say.
Don't let the media wear you guys down. Most of us ignore the doom and gloom scenario. Stay alert, be wise financially.

IMO Americans need to end their dependence on credit to purchase wants. We consume, waste, use too much of everything. Tread lightly, use less.
Goes for everyone in the Western World IMO too.
