A return to public executions, flogging and caning, selling live tickets & TV coverage would help fund the justice system. Ask a Question

It would also depict what is going to happen to your arse if you don't follow the rules. I think young people need to see this more, it might make an impression to "toe the line." But that is IMHO.

And thus begins the modern day Roman Coliseum.

"Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. On tonight's show we're gonna cap Bob Smith. You'll remember Bob from last week's show when our panel of celebrity judges decided that Bob was worthy of execution by stoning. Coming up after this very important message from the John McCain campaign, Pamela Anderson will get the ball rolling by casting the first stone at tonight's special guest. Stay tuned for all the fun and assideration here on, "Celebrity Eradication"!

Pamela Anderson? She who is without sin? Um, ...good idea! :-)

It all seems a little harsh...why not stick those ASBO kids in the stocks and charge a quid to throw tomatoes at their Burberry-clad behinds?

And rotten eggs please?

Oh please can I??

I'll be ever so good and eat my crusts and everything...

Please please please???

Of course rotten eggs, it wouldn't be a Chav-hunt without them.

I like the idea a lot but it isn't a good one. It is better to keep it the way it is. Shows like MMA and other fight shows give the kids enough ideas on how to hurt their enemies. They don't need any more.

With figures going round like the cost of keeping a single prisioner in jail in the UK for a year was £33,000 (about $65,000), you realise that reducing this someway would be a good thing for tax payers.

The suggestion above was by no means serious (though we have 20% in favour) but more as a means of opening dialogue.

We are at the sad state where our jails are full, the government won't build more, and instead is leaning of judges to give short or often no jail sentence for crimes that previously would have been certain to get one.

If my house had a basement, I would be tempted to offer the goverment to take 3 low risk prisoners off their hands for £20,000 each. I could then retire, provide a few basic meals a day and let them walk round the garden a bit and make a lot more than I am making now!

The government would save quite a bit too :)

Even factoring in the cost of prison guards and other employees, £33,000 seems ridiculous. I've lived on almost a sixth of that amount, sure it curtailed my expenditure on books and CDs but I had a roof and I didn't starve. How could they possibly justify that expenditure? I really think that prisoners ought to be working and that it should be at something that will save money somewhere else. Maybe they should pay rent out of their wages. Each cell have it's own coin operated leccy meter.

On a slightly different note, did you hear that <expletive deleted> Ian Brady wrote to his MP to complain he is paid less than other prisoners? There will always be a dark corner of my being that bemoans the fact he hasn't been shivved, raped and drowned in the bath.

It as always amazed me when I hear the cost.

Seriously, if I had a bit of spare land somewhere, I'd build a few cells and offer to house a few aging fraudster accountants, or little old lady poll tax dogers for half price!

It would be nearly as good as running the lottery!

Stunned that Sugar or Branson has not thought of it, or the Easy Jet bloke.

I think hard labour would be a good thing. Not sure the chain gang would make much, as the the runnign costs are probably high, but somethign like gutting fish or plucking chickens might do?

As for Brady and his Bitch, with you all the way!

Perhaps. But it seems to have an opposite effect on deterrence. Wasn't it an Englishman who first showed this to be so?

(Reflections on Hanging, Arthur Koestler)

I have read a few things that suggest that there is no real deterrence, whatever the threat, criminals will still be criminals.

They either think they will not be the one to get caught, or somehow put the possible fate out fo their mind, or just don't see any alternative.

This question was meant as a spoof, but I wanted to get some ideas on reducing prison costs.

Maybe we could sell tickets for guided tours, and the chance to mock prisoners in their cells :)

Hell yeah, why don't we return to the good old Middle Ages? Why don't we close down the whole justice system as it's so expensive? We should also consider to start haunting witches again.

I hope the achievements of the Age of Enlightment will resist the current pressure from a degenerating society.

Do you know any friendly ghosts who I could borrow for a spot of witch haunting?

I know a few, and it would be fun to play them up a bit.

You think we are enlightened when we have people like McCain putting up those adds, because they work? I am not blaming McCain for putting up those adds, I am not blaming voters for accepting that garbage. I am simply stating that we are not enlightened.

...because it helped so much in other eras.

I wonder who will be getting rich off it this time? Because it seems a good way of sending the continuing message that we only punish those who can't afford to buy there way out, and Hey! This time we will not only incarcerate you, but disfigure you for life!

Totally amazed that only 51% (as I right this) are against it!!!

It was meant as dark humour, and to provoke a debate about the amazing cost of keeping someone in jail, but look like it could well be the next reality TV show at this rate.

Are we really this sick.

Is someone somewhere already workign out how to do th phone in vote for the method of execution ...

Dial xxxx xxxxxx and add 1 for Stoning, 2 for electric chair, 3 for shooting ... etc etc.

As I noted above, from what I have read there is no real form of deterrence, all we can do is choose how we (society) get our revenge :(

There are dark times ahead...
