does it matter what I am? I would like to keep the belief that someone can base their decisions on impartial logic, not gender, race, age, or other environmental factors.

True, wars are always underlined by two basic ideals: the basic Fear of losing the resources necessary to continue existance (principle behind greed), and the inability to let others believe what they will (this includes religion and basic beliefs like human rights). The second is the most grave, because it is not motivated by a physical need for resources to maintain well-being, but instead purely by the mind of man, which is inherently unstable and unpredictable (note- not necessarily evil or good, just unstable). With enough advances in technology, and the human will to survive at all costs, it is almost a mathematical certainty that we will find different resources to continue our existence at the global capacity. Therefore, religion or any believe system for that matter, will still be around even when resources are no longer a problem. Many wars have been based on some sort of believe system where one party feels that their beliefs are superior(even the cold war). It could be argued that this is related to the war in the middle east, with the U.S. trying to establish governments similar to our own in foreign countries. However, that is speculative, the Crusades is one of the most obvious examples of a religious war.
Look, with the technology out there they can find a flea on a lama from space. Do you really think that someone as high profile as him would not be found if it wasn't convineint for the people running the U.S. government, whoever that may be. Once more, someone that high profile would have had tabs being kept on him by numerous organizations before he did anything drastic. No, I'm not being arrogant about the limited resources that we (United States) have as a nation, but come ON, if the ENTIRE military was really focused on the single task of just finding one person, they would. And if they are inept at such a simple task, they boy is the U.S. military screwed when they try to fight a war.
I don't care for either that strongly, but in my experience, macs are just like a PC with training wheels so the user doesn't hurt himself.
