Should the U.S. follow the rest of the world and adopt the metric system as the measurement standard?

A measurement system is not part of a country's culture... It is a common agreement. In almost all the world we use the metric system after the change of our own measurement standards... why not the US and the UK? As an engineer I cannot understand this.
