I agree that every city is going to be a mixed bag, but I'm more interested in what you think you're going to encounter when you're actually arrested or treated like a criminal (i.e. a cop comes up to you thinking you just bought drugs or something). What actually happens might be different, better or worse, but this is about impressions from experience or what you've seen.
I was thinking more along the lines of whether it's okay to lack the desire to have a more challenging and ambitious career around that age than I was about the classist side of the issue.
It's very enlightening to see a more worldwide view of the matter.
