I would read his book The God Delusion. It's a very stimulating read - some of it frustrated me because I wanted better arguments that were 'pro-religion' but I suppose that's asking a bit much from a book with such a title.
You would be surprised at how this statement, "and so I can have respect for religions and the people who follow them as they're intended to be followed and nothing but disdain and a sort of pity for those who claim to be following their religion but are really just grossly perverting its precepts" is grossly inaccurate.
People nowadays do not follow a religion (for example, Christianity) to the "book". It has been shaped by society and by their own personal beliefs about how it should be followed. Regardless of whether you take a literal or metaphorical perspective on the stories in the Bible, many of the stories tell followers to disrespect females and children and all non-believers.
So to "grossly [pervert] its precepts" is to follow the teachings by the letter which is normally unacceptable by today's standards.
